The 2019 Toyota HiAce Commuter represents a historic, ground-up reinvention of the world’s most trusted passenger van, marking the global debut of the sixth-generation (H300 series). Shifting away from the classic "cab-over-engine" design of the previous 15 years, this completely reimagined model introduces a prominent semi-bonnet front profile. By sliding the engine forward under a traditional front hood, Toyota radically enhanced front-impact crumple zone safety, drastically reduced cabin engine noise and heat vibration, and eliminated the massive floor hump between the driver and front passenger to create an entirely flat, easy-to-navigate cockpit floor. Beneath the bonnet lies a heavy-duty 2.8-liter 1GD-FTV inline-4 turbo-diesel engine borrowed directly from the rugged Hilux and Prado platforms, pumping out an impressive 161 to 174 horsepower and a mountain of low-down pulling power—up to 450 Nm of torque. This muscle is managed by a bulletproof 6-speed manual or a highly smooth 6-speed torque-converter automatic transmission, pushing power to a heavy-duty rear-wheel-drive axle while returning a highly efficient average fuel economy of roughly 9.5 to 11.0 km/L (approx. 9.1L to 10.5L/100km).
