The 2019 Mazda CX-5 features the 2.2-liter Skyactiv-D twin-turbo diesel engine. Positioned as a driver-focused crossover, the diesel variant combines Mazda's Kodo design language and premium interior materials with low-end torque and range efficiency. The Skyactiv-D diesel engine utilizes a low compression ratio for a diesel engine (14.0:1), sequential twin turbochargers, and Natural Sound Smoother technology to reduce noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH). Engine outputs vary slightly depending on the regional market variant: standard international specifications generate 190 PS (187 hp / 140 kW) and 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) of torque, while North American EPA-spec models produce 168 hp and 290 lb-ft of torque. Power is transmitted via a Skyactiv-Drive 6-speed automatic transmission to either Front-Wheel Drive (FWD) or Mazda's i-Activ All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system. Driving stability is enhanced by G-Vectoring Control Plus (GVC+), which uses engine torque braking to weight the front wheels during corner entry. Inside, higher-tier trims feature a 7.0-inch or 8.0-inch Mazda Connect infotainment system, Nappa leather seat trim, real wood accents, a 10-speaker Bose premium audio system, a heads-up Active Driving Display, and a 7-inch digital gauge cluster.
